The 'Golden Age': Shopping Centres
of the 1970s, then and now*
University of Warwick 2021 - 2025

What do shopping centres look like in 2022? As many physical retail spaces verge on obsolescence, my research investigates how shopping centres of the long ‘70s were originally envisioned and how they have been (re)adapted over time alongside changing economic, political and cultural shifts. Based in Warwick’s History of Art department, my project turns to the visual (photography, advertising, art) and the material (architecture, surface, fashion) to engage with shopping centres then, and now, in the face of an uncertain cultural/built environment.
