The 'Golden Age' of Shopping Centres:
Spaces of Consumption in 1970s Midlands*,
University of Warwick 2021 - 2024

As physical retail spaces verge on obsolescence, my research investigates how shopping centres of the long ‘70s were originally envisioned and how they have been (re)adapted over time alongside changing economic, political and cultural shifts. Based in Warwick’s History of Art department, my project turns to the visual (photography, advertising, art) and the material (architecture, surface, fashion) to engage with shopping centres then, and now, as they disappear from our cultural/built environment.
