PhD: Design/history of British shopping centres, c. 1960-80

What do shopping centres look like today? As many physical retail spaces verge on obsolescence, my research investigates how shopping centres of the long ‘70s were originally envisioned and how they have been (re)adapted over time alongside changing economic, political and cultural shifts.
Based in Warwick’s History of Art department, my project turns to the visual (photography, advertising, art) and the material (architecture, surface, fashion) to engage with shopping centres at the time of their construction, and now, in the face of an uncertain cultural/built environment.
